The members of the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department undergo continuous training to stay on top of all the latest firefighting tactics. Firefighters train every Monday evening for two hours, and practice drills designed by the chief, assistant chiefs and captains. In addition to this training, all firefighters have attended numerous North Dakota Firefighters Association training such as State Fire School.
In addition to all regular and specialized training, the members of GVFD all come from very diverse yet complimentary professions, bringing further knowledge in many topics to the fire scene as needed. Being a volunteer department, nearly all members work full-time jobs outside of the fire service.
Once a new member joins the department, they must undergo intensive training during a one year probationary period. Once the one year period is up and they have demonstrated their knowledge of the fire service to the officers, they will be voted into full membership within the department.
