Who We Are

Frequent Questions

  1. Q: How often should you service your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms?

A: If battery powered, these devices should get batteries replaced twice a year- typically at the same time as you adjust your clocks. These devices also have a life expectancy and should be replaced about every 10 years to ensure proper calibration.

  2. Q: Are we currently in a burn ban?

A: Check out the Fire Danger Index for up-to-date information regarding burning bans.

  3. Q: What do I do with old fire extinguishers?

A: There are several local agencies that do fire extinguisher inspections. If your extinguisher’s pressure gauge is outside of the green range, or if the extinguisher is getting past it’s useful life, you can contact any member of GVFD and we can potentially use them for training drills.

  4. Q: How often does the fire department train?

A: GVFD has training drills every Monday night for 2 hours as well as additional training held by the North Dakota Firefighter’s Association either on-site or at state fire school held annually in Minot ND.

  5. Q: How do I apply to volunteer with GVFD?

A: Visit the “Become a Member” tab on this site to get an application, fill it out and a member of the Membership Committee will contact you.

  6. Q: Am I allowed to have a controlled burn in the country?

A: Yes, as long as there is not currently a burning ban in place, you may perform a controlled burn as long as you contact the dispatch center at 701-352-5000 to report the burn before you start it. This prevents passers by from calling it in as a fire and dispatching the fire department. If it is a building to burn, please contact GVFD and we might be interested in using it for a training!
